With the Oscars coming up in a few weeks, we have movies on the mind. Here are a few stories about caregiving and growing older that we wanted to share (be prepared with tissues!):
Still Alice (in theaters)
Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe winning performance by Julianne Moore as a Columbia professor diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. We're always glad to see mainstream media raising awareness of the challenges so many families face.
CNN's Inside Man: Elder Care (Season 1 Epsiode 5, streaming on Netflix)
Documentarian Morgan Spurlock gives a touching personal view into his own experience with his grandmother, highlighting the range of elder care options in America today.
Big Hero 6 (in theaters)
This one's for the whole family! Although the main character is a young boy, some of our nurse friends (and NPR) have noted that Baymax the robot is one of the most realistic portrayals of the caregiver role they've seen in a while.
The Age of Love (find local screenings here)
We met Steven Loring, the filmmaker of this documentary, at a recent conference and can't wait to see this uplifting film about speed dating! Free screenings at Senior Planet and The New School are filling up fast, but keep an eye out as future viewing opportunities are added.
